The monument was erected in 1881 on the Bunardzhik hill (the hill of Liberators) in honor of the Russian soldiers who died for the liberation of Plovdiv from Ottoman rule. Then the first planting of the hill took place.
Bunardzhika is a favorite vacation spot of Plovdiv and in 1995 was declared as a landmark.
