Krastova Gora is one of the largest Christian centers in Bulgaria, which attracts a large number of pilgrims. The place is situated in the Middle Rhodope Mountain, 60 km from Plovdiv, 40 km from Asenovgrad and 6 km from the village of Borovo. Its altitude is 1,545 meters. The complex is situated on a meadow amidst a beautiful forest.

At first there was the dairy farm of Bachkovo monastery.The monks who were on service there erected the small St. Trinity monastery. It is supposed that the monks have received from the abbot of the monastery the big gold alloy icon of Bakuriani, which contained remains of the Holy Cross. Gradually pilgrims from all parts of the country started visiting the place in hope of healing. Grants from believers financed the construction of a new Orthodox church in 1995.

The reason that makes Krastova Gora attractive to so many pilgrims from all across the country is the legend that a piece of Christ’s Cross was buried there. Many legends speak of this place and how it is related to the Cross of Christ and the wonder of healing.

“The Shroud of Holy Mother” church which was completed in 1995 is situated in the beginning of the chapel complex. Chapels dedicated to the 12 apostles are placed along the area from it to a small hill.

In 1936 Tsar Boris ІІІ donated a large 99 kilogram metal cross. Now its duplicate is placed there, and it can be seen from the highest place of the alley. People believe that the cross has miraculous powers and heals incurably ill people. According to the legend, there is a spring in the region, which also has curative powers.

Krastova Gora is mostly visited in the eve of Cross Day (14 September).
Every year on 13 September  thousands of pilgrims come and pray for health and spend the night in front of “The Shroud of Holy Mother” church or pray in some of the chapels.

The nature around the Christian complex is very beautiful, and the region attracts nature admirers and people who seek a peaceful place for relaxation and rest.
