ONE DESIGN WEEK - TOUCH, SIT, DRINK
Bulgarian product designer and sculptor Konstantin Achkov appears at One Design Week for a fifth year in a row, and that fact alone acknowledges a successful and sustainable professional development. This time around he will present CUT - his latest series of chairs based on the most ancient foldable Egyptian seating furniture. Functional and simple by design, they offer a seat of either leather or textile membrane, which is also the stop element in the collapsible construction.
“Taking on such a well-known and extensively exploited theme, my task was to say something fresh and original as approach,” Achkov says. His CUT chairs display a modern clean line and intricate details, free of unreasonable ornamentation. The shape and the name of the series derive from the method of production, which is basically cutting out 18-mm plywood on a CNC router. All elements are assembled on the principle of a 3D puzzle. The chairs are perfectly suitable for outdoor use since the textile seat and backrest are made of UV protection material and the plywood has been treated with teak oil.
When you collapse them, they stand elegant and compact, and do not take up much storage room – a neat choice for public places. Seeking the best space to present the series, Konstantin Achkov has partnered with artnewscafe – be their guest, see CUT and do try them out.
