In one of her letters to her son in Spain, the writer's mother exclaims: "Spain - that was your dream, dear child! And now you are there! With its centuries-old culture and historical monuments, Spain will envelop you, intoxicate you, and transform you." Love seemingly irrevocably transforms a wealthy, egocentric, spoiled Englishwoman, Fanny Horn, and she discovers a different person within herself - devoted, self-sacrificing, loving, without expecting any reward or reciprocation... Love also transforms the Frenchman Jacques Murier, a medical graduate from Paris, who follows Fanny "through the gambling casinos and dance halls" just to be close to her, to feel her breath... Because of her, he goes to the hospital camp in Peña Ronda and becomes a true doctor. A doctor dedicated to the sick and dying, who spares no effort and sees his work as a mission... and leaves this world, gazing with loving eyes at the one he wanted to be with all his life, yet was with for such a short time... Love also transforms the fantastically devoted Jesuit to the Catholic empire, Ricardo Heredia. The Spaniard cannot abandon his faith to look love in the eyes, but this love is stronger than all ideas and beliefs. His confession of love to Fanny merges with a plea for forgiveness before God. A gunshot ends this painful transformation... A Spain where "the world seems to meet to resolve its problems." Dimitar Dimov likely longed for a New World, a different world - perhaps more harmonious... And we... long...
