Bulgarian Felt – A Message from Antiquity
On June 24, 2024, at 6:00 PM, the Regional Ethnographic Museum – Plovdiv will host the opening of the national exhibition "Bulgarian Felt – A Message from Antiquity."
The exhibition features felt products from across Bulgaria, gathered from six museum institutions: the National History Museum – Sofia, the National Ethnographic Museum – BAS (IEFEM - BAS), the Directorate of Museums – Koprivshtitsa, the Regional History Museum – Vidin, the Regional Ethnographic Museum - Plovdiv, and the National Museum "Rila Monastery." The aim is to showcase the richness and diversity of traditional felt products and their significance in Bulgarian culture and history.
The ancient technique of felting preserves centuries-old practices that originated from the nomadic lifestyle and culture. The encoded signs, symbols, and inscriptions on felt carpets retain and transmit the magic of this intangible cultural heritage from generation to generation. The exhibition displays felt items that demonstrate the beauty and richness of these products in their diverse colors, ornaments, and compositions.
The national exhibition aims to introduce the general public to this ancient craft, which has survived through time and remains preserved to this day. It seeks to popularize the craft both domestically and internationally and to contribute to the revival of this ancient tradition.
The exhibition will be open for viewing until October 25, 2024.
