With a rich and varied program, Plovdiv cultural institutes celebrate 100 years since the first celebration of the Day of the National Awakeners
For the first time the Day of the National Awakeners - November 1 was celebrated in Plovdiv in 1909. Until then, on this date was celebrated the day of St. Ivan Rilski /old style/. In 1922, the National Assembly declared this day a holiday for all "deserving Bulgarians", as they said then. In Bulgaria, liberated from Ottoman rule, both the intelligentsia and the common man are aware of the feat of the Renaissance writers and revolutionaries who created the atmosphere and led the Bulgarian spirit to the determination to lead the struggle for state sovereignty. Many towns and villages want to pay tribute to the national awakeners not only by naming streets, community centres and schools after them. For this reason, Stoyan Omarchevski, Minister of National Education of Bulgaria, in 1922 submitted a proposal to the Council of Ministers to designate November 1 as the Day of the National Awakeners .
Long before the official proclamation of this holiday by law, the Bulgarian people honored their awakeners and canonized them as saints in their historical memory. It was first celebrated in Plovdiv in 1909 and from 1922 to 1945 it was a nationwide holiday.
Since 1945 the feast has been cancelled and after a long interruption. With the Law on Supplementing the Labour Code, adopted by the 36th National Assembly on 28 October 1992, the tradition of the holiday was resumed.
This year marks the centenary of the first official celebration. On this occasion, the cultural institutes of Plovdiv have prepared a varied and interesting program for the celebration and are looking forward to welcoming Plovdiv citizens and guests to the events.

The events start on 29 and 30 October 2022, at 12.00 in front of the Plovdiv Municipality building on Plovdiv Square. "Concert of Big Band Plovdiv, with conductor Nikolay Geshev and soloist Edith Unjian
"Big Band Plovdiv is composed entirely of professional musicians and over the years has quickly become one of the musical emblems of Plovdiv. The founder, leader and conductor of the orchestra is Nikolay Geshev. Easily recognizable, temperamental on stage and much loved by his enthusiastic audience - this is the shortest way to describe the Big Band's presence. The orchestra has done numerous projects with almost all the prominent jazz and pop artists in Bulgaria. For several years, it has also partnered on stage with the talents of Art Voices Center, directed by Rumi Ivanova.

Opening: 1 November 2022, 5.30 pm - "When the boy becomes a man..." The barracks in "those" 45 years" - exhibition by Dr. Ilia Valev, curator at the Museum of History - Veliko Tarnovo
The exhibition examines conscription in the context of Bulgaria's socialist development. A time that is still controversial, but already far enough away from us to make a clear and unbiased assessment of it. It presents the barracks in parallel on two levels. The first examines the normative state framework that set and regulated the passage of military service, and the second concerns the public perceptions that shaped the image of the barracks as a mythorical process associated with the growing up of boys and their construction as 'real' men.
The exhibition exposes some curious historical facts related to the Bulgarian army during socialism, traces the customs and rituals associated with the barracks transition and the coming of age of boys, and presents the internal daily life of soldiers.
Come along to step back in time and see the barracks from a different perspective, which for some will bring back memories and for others will provide a whole new knowledge of our recent past.
The exhibition is realized with the financial support of the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Bulgaria and the Executive Agency "Military Clubs and Military Recreation".
You will be able to see it in the Exhibition Hall of REM - Plovdiv until the end of November.

Opening: 2 November 2022, 18.00 - "Stone by Stone" - exhibition of the Association "Mestra - traditional knowledge and crafts"
