7 - 30 April 2022
Museum Center for Contemporary History, part of Regional History Museum – Plovdiv, 14 Angel Bukoreshtliev St
The exhibition "The Treasures of Kraków" will be opened on April 7, 2022 at 5:30 pm at the Plovdiv Museum Center for Contemporary History.
The exhibition tells the story of Kraków - a city of millions in the heart of Europe, the old capital of Poland - the cradle and pantheon of Polish kings, an important centre in Central Europe in the Middle Ages, a city of the Pope and the bohemia, and a city of science with one of the oldest universities in Europe. A city of museums, but also of youth - over 130 000 students study here. Cosmopolitan for centuries, multicultural and open to new ideas, it remains the most Polish of Polish cities. The exhibition presents Kraków as a modern metropolis that benefits from the potential of its cultural heritage. In 1978 it was the first European urban complex to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In 2000, it was European Capital of Culture.
20 large panels on foam board present 90 works of art, architectural monuments and intangible cultural heritage sites associated with the city and significant for their cultural value, often considered masterpieces. The exhibition is divided into eight chronological parts: the Beginning (before 989), Prince and Bishop (989-1257), City (1257-1493), Blossoming (1493-1655), Decline (1655-1794), Spiritual Capital (1794-1918), Short Century (1918-1989) and Epilogue (after 1989). The history of Kraków is complemented by four more panels: the Wawel Hill, the University, the Jewish Kraków and the Kraków Identity.
