Andrea Chénier by Umberto Giordano

At the centre of the opera Andrea Chénier is the French poet of the same name, a historical figure who, in the throes of the French Revolution, went from being an ardent supporter to being ruthlessly persecuted, and ended up on the guillotine himself. Giordano supports the dramatic events and combines stirring arias and stirring duets with raucous, crowd-like folk scenes. Gavottis and court music portraying the old regime and aristocracy are as much in the content as the historical dances and marches of the French Revolution.
