Chitalishte P. R. Slaveykov – 1908

About us:

The Chitalishte was established over 110 years ago in the then “Catholic” neighborhood. At the beginning it was called “Izgrev” (Sunrise). Four years later the Balkan war started, followed by WWI, which made it impossible for the chitalishte to conduct activities beyond the loaning of books. In 1937 two more chitalishta were established in the vicinity – Petko Rachev Slaveykov in Kamenitsa and Ognishte (Fireplace) in the neighborhoods Sadiyski and Lauta. Each of the three chitalishta had its own portfolio of activities. In 1959 following the decision of the Ministry of People’s Culture the three separate establishments were merged under the name P. R. Slaveykov. Two affiliates of the chitalishte library were created – one in Kamenitsa neighborhood, the other in the Residential area of Trakia (which later on moved under the management of the newly established Chitalishte Mladost).

Due to the efforts of different people, the library is developing fast. Today it has over 28,000 volumes in diverse genres, reference books and periodicals, audio materials, a well-developed section on the history and culture of the region, etc. The Chitalishte has a library information center which is part of Glob@l libraries and offers automatic library services. We organize diverse activities including literary evenings – meetings with writers and poets, book launches, public lectures, open lessons, quiz nights; we organize competitions, celebrations of notable personalities and historical events, exhibitions. The chitalishte allows for every person, young and more mature, to find a club of their choice, to join an art group or courses in a range of subjects: piano, guitar, singing; we conduct lessons, concerts, festivals, competitions and other cultural events. The chitalishte is actively involved with children and offers opportunities for life-long learning.

Its vision is that the team not only preserves traditions but is also able to keep up with the times. It combines modernity with traditions. Almost every year since 2010, the chitalishte is either leading or taking part in various projects in partnership with other organizations. The participants in our activities have own a number of awards and prizes.

If you are curious to find out more, see the Information card of the chitalishte provided by the Regional centers for expert consultation and information (RCECI).
