For many years, Noh Yamamoto Theater has been working on the cultural rapprochement of Japan and Bulgaria through Noh, with a key ally, Maya Bezhanska. In the seven-century tradition of the theater Noh, however, the creation of a new play is extremely rare and is usually tied to a notable event. New Noh play „Orpheus “ was created by Akihiro Yamamoto, director and principal actor at the Yamamoto Theater based on Maya Bejanska's idea, as part of the official program of Plovdiv - European Capital of Culture 2019, as well as in honor of the commemorative triple anniversary of Japan-Bulgaria bilateral relations. Observing the strict canon of the theater Noh, however, the play does not recreate the myth of Orpheus, but concentrates on the cultural and emotional significance of the image of the legendary musician. The action goes on at an undefined moment in antiquity, in which destiny meets a wandering musician with the spirit of Orpheus. What is the connection between the human heart, music and nature - we will see this in this one-of-a-kind Noh play.
Starring: Orpheus Spirit - Akihiro Yamamoto, wandering musician - Ryoichi Arimatsu, Eurydice Spirit - Maya Bezhznska, Wind God - Taichiro Nomura

About Theater Noh: Noh theater was born about 7 centuries ago. It is the oldest classical performing art that still exists in its original form and continues to be performed without interruption of tradition. Noh's roots are deep - it emerges as a collection of rituals, many of which honor the souls of the dead through dance and song. Gradually, theater staff gained the patronage of high-ranking feudal lords, who cemented Noh's position as a samurai art. From the 16th century onwards, the ability to sing and dance Noh became part of the samurai's primary education. Even in contemporary Japan, Noh continues to be one of the most revered performing arts. It combines many traditional elements and plays a key role in shaping Japanese cultural identity. This is why many Japanese - from business people to housewives - study it as a hobby. In 2008, the Noh Theater was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage under the auspices of UNESCO.
