The performance "The Defeated" by Theodora Dimova of Stoyan Bachvarov Drama Theatre - Varna will be performed on the stage of the Puppet Theatre in Plovdiv on two consecutive days - 11 and 12 April 2023 at 7 pm. The performance is not recommended for persons under 12 years of age!

The performance is based on the novel "The Defeated" by Teodora Dimova, the stage version is by Stoyan Radev. The novel is a harrowing 21st century work about the ugly truths of totalitarian 20th century Bulgaria. A memoir of pain that does not burn out and a testament to humanity in the midst of cruelty, Teodora Dimova's novel not only touches, but ignites the senses. It doesn't just take you out of your comfort zone, it accuses. This accusation, unnamed directly but woven into every line, asks difficult questions. To those who have allowed a court falsified as "People's" into Bulgarian history, and to those who have remained silent, ignored, forgotten. Why did we leave this gap in the past and in "memory, which is perhaps the most important, the most saving ability of man", asks Teodora Dimova.

"I wrote the novel "The Defeated" long and painfully, because I had to immerse myself together with the characters in that not so distant era, which our parents had experienced, but were afraid to talk about it even with us, their children. Now the novel has been adapted for the first time for the stage in Varna. It is a bow of the Bulgarian theatre to the memory of our ancestors, to their impersonal fates. The only thing we can do for them is to remember, to know, to pass on to other generations. Memory is perhaps the most important, the most saving faculty of man."
