The play tells the tragicomic story of an elderly woman and her daughter amidst the everyday life of an ordinary Russian home. The mother is ill and awaiting her near end, sad that she has not yet seen her daughter married and surrounded by children. The daughter, too, is tormented by this situation and wonders how to inspire faith in her mother that this will happen and she will live to see her daughter married. And decides to invent hope! It is this decision that sets off a bunch of funny situations and misunderstandings, and brings the play to a touching conclusion.
