The Muslim community invites the people of Plovdiv to the "Day of Ashure" holiday.

For another year, with the support of the Plovdiv Municipality, the Muslim Board and the Regional Muftiship in Plovdiv are pleased to organize the celebration of the "Day of Ashure". This year it will be celebrated on August 8, Monday, at 12.00 in front of the Jumaya Mosque.

According to the tradition of this day, Muslims in Bulgaria cook ashura and distribute it to their neighbors, regardless of whether they are Christians or Muslims. The celebration of Day of Ashure is a rallying point for all of humanity and is considered a common value of all major religions. The organizers invite the people of Plovdiv to join the celebration, which will begin with a short greeting and an explanation of the meaning of the messages of "Ashure Day" for peace, solidarity, understanding, compassion, tolerance.

The "Day of Ashure" is a holiday that is celebrated according to the Muslim calendar, but has its genesis from all Abrahamic religions. The holiday is celebrated on the 10th day of the month of Muharram according to the Muslim calendar. This day is marked in history with many important events for the human race. Such an event is the end of the Flood and the landing of Noah's Ark. On this day, Adam (or Adem) is taken out of Paradise, then meets Eve again.

The "Day of Ashure" is also associated with the rescue of the Jews from Egypt. Then they have nothing to eat, and they receive a command from the Most High to gather whatever they find and make a feast out of it. Thus, in this feast there are beans, chickpeas, sugar, wheat, milk, and today we know it as Ashura.

Besides the distribution of Ashure in front of the Jumaya Mosque, young people in traditional Turkish costumes will treat the guests to Turkish sherbet, and then there will be a ritual - sema, dedicated to the holiday, which will be performed by the only dervish in Bulgaria - Vasil Tosev from Plovdiv.

Ashure Day 2022 is implemented with the support of the Municipality of Plovdiv as part of the Cultural Calendar of the city, in the part to support the holidays of the ethnic communities in Plovdiv.
