Exhibition: “The magic of embroydery from Razlog”
Organizers: REM – Plovdiv, HM - Razlog
Place: Exhibition Hall, REM – Plovdiv
On 16 September at Regional Ethnographic Museum - Plovdiv is the opening of guest exhibition "The Magical Embroidery from Razlog - Zapeska" by History Museum - Razlog. It presents a selection of the most valuable and beautiful embroideries from the XIX the beginning of XX century, embroidered to decorate women’s traditional shirts (koshuli) and costumes from the Razlog region. This is one of the most important collections which is part of the fund of History Museum – Razlog.
With their rich and bright colours, they are an integral part of Bulgarian folk art. Particularly beautiful is the Razlog embroidery, called zapeska. We are familiar with about 28 basic symbols (tulips, carnations, bells, strawberries, flowers, pliers, etc.) embroidered on the sleeves. The most used colour is red, as well as blue, green, yellow - all life-giving and natural colours. This embroidery is traditional for the city and it is believed it originated from there before spreading to nearby villages. Organizing the collection is an ongoing process whose main goal is to showcase the old techniques and the colour palettes used by women from Razlog.
The exhibition is beautifully illustrated with posters and photographs complemented by authentic items from men’s and women’s traditional costumes, embroideries and pottery.
The specifics of the traditional culture are subject of research, as a step in this direction are the photographed clothes, traditional holidays and customs of the Bulgarian Roots Foundation, who work for the popularization of the local culture with the museum in Razlog.
In 2021, the "Catalogue of Embroideries from Razlog" was published, with the aim to promote the exhibits outside the scientific circles and to reach all curious readers who love the folklore culture. There are embroiderers in the city, who with diligence and devotion continue to reproduce the Razlog zapeski. Thus, they preserve the past, but also transfer its magic and bring it to life in the modern days.
