In the special year 2024 for us, when the Municipal Institute "Ancient Plovdiv" celebrates 55 years since its establishment, we invite you to celebrate together April 18 - the International Day for the Preservation of Cultural Monuments.
Come to the official opening of the Ancient peristyle building "Eirene" and the celebration of the third anniversary of the Visitor Center of the Bishop’s Basilica of Philippopolis.

16.00 – 17.30 | Meeting-conversation in the Bishop’s Basilica of Philippopolis
You are welcome to meet the designers, researchers, archaeologists, restorers, architects and builders involved in the large-scale project for the study, restoration and exhibition of the Bishop’s Basilica of Philippopolis.
They will share how the seven-year realization of the project turned from a dream into a reality, uniting the efforts of the "America for Bulgaria" foundation, the Ministry of Culture and the Municipality of Plovdiv, nearly 50 Bulgarian companies from Plovdiv and the country, expert teams in various fields and hundreds of volunteers.
The result is a modern visitor center and space for events and educational activities, which today reveals the magnificence of the late antique mosaics of Philippopolis to visitors from all over the world.
18.00 - 18.30 | Official opening of the Ancient peristyle building "Eirene" - part of a series object "The Bishop’s Basilica of Philippopolis and Late Antique Mosaics of Philippopolis , Roman province of Thrace", entered in the Indicative List of the Republic of Bulgaria in UNESCO in 2018 together with the Bishop’s Basilica of Philippopolis and the Small Earlychristian Basilica of Philippopolis .

Ancient peristyle building "Eirene" from Philippopolis
The ancient street network with a crossroads and the Ancient peristyle building "Eirene" - today exhibited in situ (in place) in the so-called "Archaeological" underpass, were discovered by archaeologists Zdravko Karov and Mina Bospachieva during rescue archaeological research in 1983-1984 in connection with the reconstruction of the former "Georgi Dimitrov" boulevard (today "Tsar Boris III Obedinitel" boulevard) and the construction of a collector and underpass installation.
After the completion of the archaeological survey of the site, a large-scale conservation campaign of the archaeological structures and mosaics was carried out, during which the representative part of the "Eirene" building was set aside as a separate hall in order to ensure the necessary conditions for the storage and display of the finds.
The ancient streets - cardo (north-south) and decumanus (east-west) have been leveled, preserved and serve as the main artery of the underpass, and the premises of the ancient buildings along them have been adapted for use as shops.
In the period 2003 – 2004, the mosaic was restored and exhibited with the financial support of the Embassy Fund for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage of the US State Department.
The Ancient peristyle building „Eirene” (Tsar Boris III Obedinitel Blvd. 89, "Archeological" underpass) will welcome visitors from April 19, 2024.
